K.K. Murthy BANGALORE: Though all spoke about the efforts put into the construction of Chowdiah Memorial Hall, friends, neighbours and those who knew K.K. Murthy closely brought to fore his multifaceted personality which reflected his work in field of music and politics. Speakers spoke at length about his tenacity in getting the works done despite difficulties. “We are sad that a person like him could not get a free hand in realising his dreams, as we all look at a person with political angle without realising the individual’s calibre,” said the former Minister K.H. Srinivas, at the condolence meeting held at Chowdiah Memorial on Sunday. Murthy died here on December 23. Mr. Srinivas said Murthy had to face several difficulties while he started the construction of the hall in 1978. But with sheer determination he built the structure, which is widely known for its excellent architecture and management. “When I was the Minister for Kannada and Culture, the government sanctioned Rs. 5 lakh. I consider this decision as very satisfying,” he said. If Murthy’s services had been used, the State could have got a state-of-art film city even before Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, he added. Singer Shimoga Subbanna said Murthy built the hall in memory of violinist Chowdiah, who brought recognition to Mysore when Chennai dominated the field of Carnatic music. Chowdaiah was also a close friend of Murthy’s father K. Puttu Rao, who was a music connoisseur. Veteran percussionist T.A.S. Mani, V. Krishnan of Percussive Arts Centre, Kuchipudi dancer Veena Murthy Vijay spoke about Murthy’s support for music. The former Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh; president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee M. Mallikarjun Kharge; and the former Law Minister D.B. Chandre Gowda were among those who spoke.
