VC post: three names shortlisted

Staff Correspondent

Panel has sent names to Governor

55 persons had applied for the post

Governor likely to take decision by January 31

BIJAPUR: The Search Committee, headed by the former Chief Secretary Teresa Bhattacharya, has recommended three names for the post of Vice-Chancellor of the Karnataka State Women’s University (KSWU), Bijapur.

According to sources, the committee at its sitting in Bangalore on Saturday considered the names of Nalini Prabhakar, a retired professor from the University of Agricultural Science, Dharwad; Geetha Bali of the Department of Microbiology, University of Bangalore; and Indumathi of the Department of Economics, University of Mysore.

The names have been forwarded to Governor Rameshwar Thakur, who will appoint one of them.

If he was not satisfied with the recommendation, the Governor might ask the committee to send a fresh set of names, as was done in the case of Mysore University, an official who did not want him to be quoted told The Hindu.

In all, 55 persons, including 34 men, had applied for the post.

However, the committee decided to consider the applications of only women candidates, keeping in view the spirit of Karnataka State University Act 2000, a section of which says preferably a woman be appointed as Vice-Chancellor of KSWU.

V.B. Maganur has been acting as Vice-Chancellor since the retirement of Syeda Akhtar on October 26, 2007.

The Governor is likely to name the new Vice-Chancellor by January 31, as Mr. Maganur, who is a faculty of the SJMV College for Women, Hubli, which is affiliated to the varsity, is scheduled to retire from service on that day.
