Protest: Members of All India Kisan Sabha, Haveri, demonstrating at the Gandhi statue in Bangalore on Sunday. BANGALORE: Members of the All India Kisan Sabha, on Sunday, staged a dharna demanding the State Government’s intervention to reopen Sangur sugar factory in Haveri district and release the salaries of sugar factory employees. Around 50 protesters, including women, who staged the dharna in front of Mahatma Gandhi statue here said that they had been fighting for their rights for several weeks now. They had even submitted a memorandum to Governor Rameshwar Thakur in this regard. A release said that nearly three lakh tonnes of sugarcane is ready for harvest in Haveri district, and that the delay in reopening of the factory has given anxious moments to farmers. “Already, sugarcane on nearly 42,000 acres has been affected due to the delay. Besides, 661 employees of the factory have not received salaries for the last 20 months,” the release said. The kisan sabha has threatened to intensify the struggle if its demand of reopening of the sugar factory and disbursement of salaries to the employees are not met.
