Titan Industries, Sankara Nethralaya sign MoU

CHENNAI: Titan Industries and Sankara Nethralaya have signed a memorandum for technical collaboration in training optical store personnel for the Titan Eye+ brand of spectacles optical chain.
The training programme, slated to begin on February 1, will last six to 12 weeks. Four batches will be trained each year, producing 700 trained personnel over three years. The students will undergo training for four weeks at Titan’s Training Centre in Hosur. In the next two weeks, they will receive hands-on training at Sankara Nethralaya, where they will get to work in various departments.
An optical shop requires three cadres of staff – optometrist, style consultant and technician. Technicians will be trained in grinding the lenses and converting them to prescription glasses, explained Medical Research Foundation’s Optical Services manager S. Viswanathan.
“The entire Indian market is underserved, as roughly 300 million people need to have their vision corrected. Now only around 90 million people are wearing spectacles. We are experts in retailing and styling, but not in functionality,” said Bhaskar Bhat, managing director of Titan Industries. The company plans to set up 250 stores across the country, around 40 of them in smaller towns, with technical support from the eye hospital.
Currently eight Titan Eye+ stores function in Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Nagpur. Testing is done free of cost and the Titan Eye+ brand glasses are being sold in various price categories starting from Rs.345, he told reporters.
