Recruit Kannadigas in Railways, say activists
Staff Correspondent
DAVANGERE: A large number of activists of the Karnataka Hitharakshana Vedike (KHV) stopped the Kurla Express for 45 minutes here on Sunday, in protest against what they termed injustice to Kannadigas in railway recruitment. Earlier, the activists burnt the effigy of Union Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav at Gandhi Circle.
The protesters said that 4,700 posts had been filled up by recruiting people from Bihar, depriving Kannadigas of employment opportunities.
Condemning the discrimination, the protesters demanded that the Prime Minister stop the recruitment process in the Railway Ministry and institute an inquiry into the process. Till such time, recent recruitments carried out should be kept in abeyance, they urged. KHV leaders Ramegowda and Athigere Manjunath demanded the resignation of Mr. Yadav and sought better treatment of people from the State. They criticised the way in which the Union Government had been dilly-dallying over the award of classical language status to Kannada, despite repeated memorandums and agitations staged. They urged the Union Government to act quickly on them.
