HONOUR: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala conferring honorary doctorate on A. Sivasailam, Chairman of Amalgamations Group, Chennai, at the convocation of Madurai Kamaraj University on Saturday. P. Maruthamuthu (second left), Vice-Chancellor, and lyricist R. Vairamuthu (left), look on. MADURAI: The prediction of global investment banking firm Goldman and Sachs that India would be among the top three economies in the world is certainly appearing possible with the country transforming itself from ‘land of ideas’ to ‘land of opportunities’, according to T.K. Chandrashekar, Director, National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram. “It was predicted that India would figure in the top three economies along with China and the US. If cards are played rightly, the global status can be achieved by 2025 itself,” he said. Prof. Chandrashekar was addressing Madurai Kamaraj University’s 41st annual convocation which was presided over by Governor/Chancellor Surjit Singh Barnala. He said that India was under the grip of import substitution till the economy was opened up in 1991 and there was no motivation to innovate in a protected environment. Prof. Chandrashekar said that more than 100 international companies had set up research and development centres in India. Earlier, the Governor conferred honorary doctorates on four persons in recognition of their achievements. M. Santappa, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Madras, and R. Rangarajan, Chairman, Vel Tech Group of Institutions, Chennai, were presented the Doctor of Science (honoris causa) degrees. Honorary doctorates (D. Litt) were conferred on A. Sivasailam, Chairman, Amalgamations Group, and noted lyricist, R. Vairamuthu. Vice-Chancellor P. Maruthamuthu in his welcome address said that the University Grants Commission had sanctioned Rs.30 crore under the University with Potential for Excellence (UPE) project which would be utilised for academic activities and infrastructure development. Degrees were presented to 30,000 candidates and Ph.D. was awarded to 183 candidates while 80 students received prizes/medals at the convocation.
