Slum dwellers face eviction threat

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: There are at least three slums in the city in which the residents are facing the threat of eviction thanks to developers having an eye on such prime lands, according to the Karnataka Kolargeri Nivasigala Samyukta Sanghatane (KKNSS).

State Vice-President of KKNSS G. Ankaiah said here on Saturday that about 55 families in Chandra Layout, in Uttarahalli Assembly constituency, were in danger of being evicted. Families had been living in the slum for the last 15 years in 1.25 acres.

Mr. Ankaiah told The Hindu that this slum was completely burnt down in a fire accident in 1993 and the Government had directed the Bangalore Development Authority to construct a housing colony with all facilities. However, the BDA was yet to commence work. With the area insufficient to house all the 52 families, the Government provided alternative land to house 45 families at Arundathinagar.

Bangalore district convenor of the KKNSS R. James Jayaraj said various organisations in Chandra Layout — B.R. Ambedkar and Subhas Chandra Bose Sangha, Ambedkar Sahara Welfare Association and various local women’s organisations and the KKNSS, had appealed to the BDA to immediately release the land to the evicted slum dwellers. The KKNSS has also appealed to the Governor to intervene in the matter.

Mr. Jayaraj said a similar situation was likely to occur in various other slums including the Khamar Nagar, Muthurya Bande, Ahmed Nagar, Gangondanahalli and Makkah Masjid slums in the city. The KKNSS has appealed to the Governor to initiate action to develop these slums under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission programme.

The KKNSS is working at bringing together the slum dwellers who face the threat of eviction.
