Road accidents caused by RTC are on the decline, says official

GUNTUR: The number of road accidents caused by the APSRTC buses are declining owning to several safety measures taken by the RTC, APSRTC Chief Commercial Manager Sadasiva Rao has said.

Addressing a meeting to mark the observance of 19th Road Safety Week celebrations here on Sunday, he said that during the year 2007-2008, the numbers of accidents are 2,367 when compared to 2,868 in 2006 and 2,584 which took place in 2005. He said that recent surveys have showed that occupancy ratio is RTC buses have gone up and the main reason for the public to repose faith is the safety factor.

Better record

When compared to Maharashtra, which has the largest fleet of buses, the State has a better safety record with the accident rate pegged at 0.12 per cent, while Maharashtra has 0.1 per cent.

Most of the road mishaps were found to be taking place on national highways followed by State Highways, he said.

The State recorded 42, 857 accidents in 2007, out of which 12, 097 were killed and 60,008 were injured. In the year 2007 alone, there were 2,367 accidents caused by RTC buses.

He complimented the Guntur region for putting in place an effective safety drill and said that several measures implemented by the region were replicated in other regions in the State.

Mr. Rao also gave away the safety awards to S.A Karim, Jayapaul to their outstanding record in the region.

Two other drivers, S.D. Alla Bakshi and N.S. Seshagiri Rao received State level awards at Hyderabad.

Short film

Guntur Regional Manager S.A. Ansari said that most of the accidents take place due to known reasons such as, cell phone driving, drunken driving and driving under stress. A short film directed by him titled, `Bhadratha’ has about 50 points covering various aspects of safety driving.
