Letters to the Editor
There is no doubt the incident in Mumbai, in which two women were molested by a mob during New Year’s Eve celebration, is a shame and the culprits must be punished. But should we not pause for a moment to think of the root cause? Most of the television serials, movies and even print media do everything they can to instigate the youth and corrupt their minds. Without tackling the root cause, it is not possible to stop such criminal acts. C.S. Sundaresha, Bangalore The fact that in a city which boasts of being safe for women, a mob of 70 men groped and molested two women on the main thoroughfare is outrageous. Mumbai is turning into a city that is getting increasingly and scandalously unsafe for women. The maximum city is slowly but surely losing its reputation. Priya Manoj, Chennai There are reports of similar incidents from other cities too. It is entirely possible that most of the people who make up the mob are decent, not normally associated with such incidents. But when they are anonymous, their baser instincts take over. It is no use making appeals to their good sense. The law should be amended to punish all those present in the mob that commits an offence. N.K. Raghavendran, Bangalore
