DHAKA: Foreign Affairs Adviser of Bangladesh, Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, has expressed satisfaction at the reported decision by the Indian government to lift the ban on Bangladeshi investments in India. “My belief is that it will help those Bangladeshi businessmen who are eager to invest in north-eastern India,” Dr. Chowdhury told newspersons on Saturday. Earlier, the Indian government amended its Foreign Exchange Management Regulations, 2000 to allow for the FDI in India from Bangladesh on a case-by-case basis. The decision was taken by New Delhi after approval by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board. The regulations had put a ban on FDI largely on security considerations. Jairam Ramesh, Minister of State for Commerce, while addressing the inaugural function of the India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Dhaka in July last, assured the Bangladeshi businessmen that the restriction would be withdrawn.
