South Zone championship from Jan.9

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Swimming Association, after a gap of five years, will conduct the South Zone age- group aquatics championship at the P.M. Swim Centre in Jayanagar here from January 9 to 11.

About 450 swimmers are expected to take part in the championship and for the first time, all Southern units will be represented at the meet. Pondicherry will be fielding a team for the first time. Besides swimming, there will also be water polo contests involving Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.

Originally the meet was scheduled to be conducted as a short course championship and was slated to be held at D’ Paul School in Mysore in the last week of December 2007, but the change in dates made the organisers to shift the venue to long course pool in Bangalore as the Mysore school had re-opened for its academic sessions.

“We are, however, looking at the option of having a short course championship for the southern States and south zone meet could well be conducted as a short course event if the host states desire so,” said Mr. T.D. Vijayaraghavan, secretary of the KSA and vice-president of the Swimming Federation of India.

Mr. Vijayaraghavan also said that a sub-junior water polo and diving exhibition contests will be held during the championship. The south zone championship is being sponsored by Shriman Harnamdas Kapoor Trust, a philanthropic institution, which has been actively involved in education, health care and women’s empowerment programmes. — Special Correspondent
