MADURAI: Tamil Nadu is ahead of other States in terms of providing care for the disabled and has created a benchmark for others to emulate, said Sandeep Khanna, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Addressing a workshop here on Saturday, he said that a perception abroad was that India was doing better than many countries in the world for the disabled. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment along with Postal Department released a Braille stamp on December 3, 2007 to commemorate the 200th birth anniversary of Louis Braille which falls in 2009. During discussions, a non-governmental organisation representative wanted mobile clinics for covering persons with low-vision as it would be feasible to cover a good number of people. Indian Association for the Blind representative Jinnah asked for the release of grants in time from the department.
