Authorities told to stop work on Makkaji Chowk

Special Correspondent

The project has been mired in litigations and disputes

MYSORE: The controversy surrounding the construction of Makkaji Chowk, a commercial complex, refuses to die down with the Citizens’ Forum cautioning the authorities from going ahead with the work.

The attention of the Mysore City Corporation (MCC), which has leased out the land to a private group Maverick Holdings and Investment Ltd., of Bangalore, to construct the commercial complex, has been drawn to a PIL filed by the Association of Concerned and Informed Citizens of Mysore (ACICM), which is pending in the High Court.

Pending

The project has been pending for many decades and mired in litigations and land dispute.

It was only two years ago that MCC handed over nearly 4.2 acres of land adjoining the Town Hall to the private group on a Built Own Operate Transfer (BOOT) basis.

The new commercial complex is expected to have about 155 shops and a multiplex apart from an entertainment zone and a food court and parking facility for nearly 650 vehicles. But the ACICM, on Sunday, decided to meet MCC Commissioner P. Manivannan and apprise him of the dispute and the controversy surrounding the project while drawing his attention to the pending PIL. “We will urge the Commissioner to stop the work till the newly-elected councillors take oath and the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor are installed,” said M. Lakshmana, convenor of ACICM. The PIL filed by the ACICM disputes a few figures given by the project promoters, one of them pertaining to the height of the structure which has been given as 10.5 metres. Sunday’s meeting comes in the light of a demolition drive launched by the MCC to evict the existing tenants to pave way for the construction of the complex.
