Two houses burgled in a single day

Staff Reporter

Reported from Ashok Nagar and Border Thottam

CHENNAI: Unidentified burglars decamped with 210 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs one lakh in cash from two houses each situated at Ashok Nagar and at Border Thottam near Anna Salai when the residents were away on Saturday.

Police said that when Balasubramanian, a resident of Anusuya Street near Rangarajapuram Main Road and his wife, had been to work, they had locked the house. However, on return in the evening, they found the lock broken and the gold jewellery weighing around 100 sovereigns missing.

On information, the Kodambakkam police visited the scene and lifted finger prints. DCP (T.Nagar) S. Lakshmi said special teams had been formed.

In the second incident, police said that Syed Rahman residing on the Abdul Khader Street Border Thottam near Anna Salai locked his house at night and went to attend a relative’s wedding in Purasawalkam.

Some of his relatives who had also come to attend the wedding had kept their jewels in the almirah.

When Mr Rahman returned home at around 2 a.m., he found the door lock broken and the jewelleries weighing 110 sovereigns and Rs one lakh in cash missing from the almirah.

As preliminary inquiries suggested that it could be the handiwork of some insiders, police picked up a domestic help for interrogation, said Joint Commissioner of Police (Central) P.Balasubramanian.
