ENSURING WELL-BEING: Polio drops being administered to a child as part of the immunisation campaign launched by the Chennai Corporation. CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation immunised over 4.4 lakh children in the city against polio on Sunday, nearly achieving the 4.88 lakh target set for the campaign. The campaign was inaugurated by Mayor M. Subramanian at the Saidapet Welfare Centre. Hundred mobile booths and 1,026 fixed booths offering polio drops were set up. One polio booth was set up for every 500 children, the Corporation officials said. Booths were set up at bus stands, temples, railway stations, hospitals, PHCs and Corporation schools. Mobile booths were employed to reach out to construction workers, particularly those from other States – a special target group for the campaign. By the evening, excluding immunisations given at private hospitals, the number of children immunised had crossed 4.4 lakh, officials said. The mobile booths had immunised more than 19,000 children and fixed booths at bus stands had immunised about 12,000. The BSNL was roped in to help spread the word about the campaign, along with other private telecom companies, urging subscribers to get children in the 0-5 age group immunised.
