TAMBARAM: A batch of 20 students from the United States has now come to Chennai to explore the myriad facets of India.

As many as 20 students from five universities in Mid West U.S. will be spending about four months in India as part of an academic project on religion and culture in India, organised principally by Elmhurst College in Illinois, Chicago.

On Saturday, the students were put through a rigorous session of Yoga at Madras Christian College, Tambaram, by instructor P. Gopinath who taught them basic asanas such as vajrasana and dhanurasana. Mr. Gopinath, a Central government employee who also trains players of the Indian Cricket League and at the MRF Pace Foundation, said the interest shown by the American students was encouraging.

“Yoga is an integral part of the project during the academic tour in India and students were looking forward to it even before they left home,” said Paul Parker, Professor and Chair, Department of Religion and Theology, Elmhurst College. The students would be based in MCC and would be visiting different parts of India to get a closer look at its fine arts, religion, village administration and a host of other areas. In Tamil Nadu, the students would visit the ongoing dance festival in Mamallapuram and other important cultural centres including Madurai, Thanjavur and Kancheepuram.
