“Social organisations have a vital role”
MADURAI: Organisations such as Rotary International were needed in these times of global unrest as political processes were not able to bring about international cooperation, the Chairman of Law Commission of India, AR. Lakshmanan, said here on Saturday.
After inaugurating the conference of Rotary International District 3210 organised by the Rotary Club of Karaikudi, he said that any one could make a difference provided the person had the will and commitment to the society at large.
“History is dotted with such people,” the former Judge of Supreme Court said, pointing out to the lives of Mahatma Gandhi, Albert Einstein, Swami Vivekananda and Mother Teresa. The Indian judiciary was fortunate to have had people who upheld the rights of millions of poor people in the country.
Recalling the contributions made by judges such as V.R. Krishna Iyer, former judge of the Apex Court, he also spoke about his tenure in the judiciary, which he served for almost two decades.
He said that during his tenure in a Division Bench in the Kerala High Court, one of the important judgements was on banning smoking in public places. “Based on studies about the effect of smoking on public health, the judgement was delivered. It was praised internationally.”
Dr. Lakshmanan lauded the organisation for the humanitarian services rendered by it.
