Create infrastructure for ryots: Swamy

Special Correspondent

MADURAI: The Government must create export opportunities for farmers by providing adequate infrastructure, Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy has said.

Speaking at a seminar organised by the Southern India Regional Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (Madurai Branch) here on Sunday, he said that many farmers were committing suicide owing to acute poverty.

The problem was felt more in Puducherry where 835 out of every one lakh population (of farmers) were committing suicide.

“This is one of the greatest slurs in the country. Farmers are suffering because of low procurement price (of their produce). The Government should create export opportunities by developing facilities such as small airports and cold storage facilities. We have to enable them to export.”

The cost of imported wheat paid by the Government was Rs. 18.51 a kg while it was just Rs. 8 in the local market. “Agriculture must be declared as an industry and all benefits given to farmers. Information Technology must be employed as a tool to enhance quality of textiles,” he said adding that the textile industry was in a bad shape in Madurai.

“We are producing quality software but it gets exported. We have to focus on delivering quality education. Countries with a good education and financial system alone have developed.”
