24 lorries booked for Act violation

FOR SAFETY sAKE: RTO officials checking a goods carrier on Chennai Bypass Road in Tiruchi on Sunday.

TIRUCHI: Officials of the Regional Transport Office, Tiruchi, on Sunday conducted a special drive against goods carriers that violated the Motor Vehicle Act. Twenty-four cases were booked.

The drive, which lasted about two hours, was organised as part of the Road Safety Week being observed here.

A team of officials led by Regional Transport Officer, Tiruchi, M. Natarajan conducted the drive on Chennai Bypass Road, which was notorious for violations, and checked goods carriers which passed through the road.

Cases of overload

Official sources said five cases of overload and four cases, each under the heads ‘over height’ and ‘excessive rear overhang,’ were booked.

Cases were booked against four lorries found plying without danger light and red reflectors, while another four vehicles were booked for using air horns. Three vehicles were penalised for using dazzling headlights. The total fine amount imposed on the erring vehicles was Rs.85,000.

Check report

The sources said the RTO officials issued check report to the erring vehicles directing to pay the fine amount to the Regional Transport Office concerned.

Pamphlets containing road safety messages were distributed to the vehicle drivers to create awareness among them on traffic rule adherence and ways to prevent road accidents.
