JAIPUR: Orthopaedic surgeon and inventer of the world-famous Jaipur foot, P.K. Sethi, died here early on Sunday following cardiac arrest. He was 80. He is survived by his wife, son and three daughters. The body was cremated later in the day. Padma Shri recipientRecipient of the Padma Shri and Magsaysay awards, Dr. Sethi developed the artificial limb for the handicapped in 1968, in association with master artisan Ramchandra Sharma at the Sawai Man Singh Hospital here. He fine-tuned technical aspects of the prosthesis and popularised it among amputees. Before the invention of Jaipur foot, artificial limbs were of the solid-ankle-cushion-heel variety, fashioned for wearing shoes and sitting on chairs. Dr. Sethi and Mr. Sharma experimented with various materials and succeeded in fabricating the foot with vulcanised rubber. Jaipur foot – popularised all over the world for its utility and low cost – is now manufactured on a large scale by the Mahavir Vikalang Sahayata Samiti (MVSS), a non-governmental organisation headed by the former SEBI Chairman D.R. Mehta. Leg amputees fitted with the artificial limb can walk and run on rough terrain, climb trees and even squat on an Indian style toilet. Dr. Sethi was presently a consultant with the private Santokba Durlabhji Memorial Hospital here. He was working on lightweight calliper for the polio-afflicted. Mr. Mehta and MVSS chief consultant N.K. Mathur said Dr. Sethi made enormous contribution for the welfare of the disabled and leg amputees.
