“250 died in accidents last year”
Staff Reporter
KARUR: Most of the people driving vehicles in Karur district are either unaware or not fully aware of the road rules. Persons without adequate training and those who breach road rules were others who contribute to the burgeoning road accidents in the district, according to Collector T.N. Venkatesh.
He said that over 250 persons died in road accidents in the district during last year.
Speaking after inaugurating a medical camp for the automobile drivers as part of the Road Safety Awareness Week campaign here on Monday, Mr. Venkatesh said that healthy mind in a healthy body contributed a lot for safe driving and road usage.
Urging drivers to strictly adhere to road rules, the Collector pointed out that the district boasts of National Highways to a length of over 150 km.
The district formed the junction of the Tiruchi-Coimbatore stretch of NH 67 and the Salem-Dindigul stretch of NH7 and hence there was a lot of heavy vehicle traffic through the district.
Also people from varied districts and states drive their vehicles through the district.
Whatever the road be, any casual aberration in observing road rules on the part of the road users lead to road accidents involving loss of life and property. That could be avoided if everyone adheres to basic rules, Mr. Venkatesh noted.
A large number of autorickshaw and other automobile drivers attended the medical camp.
