Point-to-point bus service

A point-to-point (PP) service from Madurai to Ramnathapuram was introduced in 1992 to facilitate the staff to reach office in time when the Collectorate was shifted from Madurai to Ramnathapuram. Buses stopped at Madurai, Paramakudi and Ramnathapuram.

I used to regularly travel by this bus, which used to start at 07.40 a.m. from Madurai and reach Ramnathapuram Collectorate before 10 a.m. Everything went smooth till the middle of October 2007, when the point-to-point bus services were made to stop and go at Tirupuvanam and Manamadurai. This resulted in delay in reaching our offices. We wonder the reason behind the introduction of these two stoppings. Hence, we request the officials to withdraw the two stoppings.

Rash driving by buses

It was a bad news that a middle-aged woman was crushed to death when she got caught between two buses leaving the Tirunelveli Junction bus-stand at an erratic speed.

It was a good news that the very next day (The Hindu dated Dec.31) the police swung into action and impounded as many as 50 buses.

It was commendable the police resisted pressure from the bus owners. What is needed is consistent action against driving vehicles in a rash manner.

Fee for UGD connection

The underground drainage (UGD) work is in progress at Ramanthapuram town. A sum of Rs.7,000 is being charged for providing UGD connection to a house by the Municipality.

The charge seems to be abnormal.

There are no industries or employment-oriented enterprises in the town. Most of the residents in this town are agricultural labourers, construction workers and roadside vegetable and fruit vendors.

There is no justification in fixing a huge amount for connection. The State Government should exempt the residents from paying the house connection charge as a special case.
