Drop free TV scheme

Social security is the main concern of Central and State governments. Article 41 of the constitution requires the State to provide effective provisions in case of education, employment and standard of living including food, clothing, housing and health care. So, the efforts of the State Government to provide the poor with rice at Rs.2 per kg, free supply of saris and dhotis during festivals through PDS shops and issue of pattas for the landless are commendable. However, the distribution of free colour TV sets is not a social security measure. The scheme may be causing a great economic strain to the public exchequer. The Chief Minister is justifying this economically unviable scheme for political reasons. The reasoning that every scheme has its own pitfalls may seem to be correct as in the case of smuggling of PDS rice. But the scheme must be scrapped for the health of the economy without standing on false prestige.

Dangerous bridge

About a furlong away from Tiruchendur Mail Bus Stand, on the way to Tuticorin, there are two bridges – one old and the other new- over a canal. While the latter is used by vehicles bound for Tuticorin and back, the former is used by two wheelers, autos, vans, minibuses and even loaded trucks to reach the interior parts of Veerapandian Pattanam from Tiruchendur because of a short cut. Immediately after crossing the new bridge, there is a short cut for these areas. Owing to the rash driving of four-wheeler drivers, especially minibuses, cyclists and two-wheeler riders find it very difficult to negotiate the narrow bridge which does not have parapets. There is the risk of slipping into the canal, resulting in fractures or fatal injuries. The fate of pedestrians is not dissimilar. I request the authorities to demolish the old bridge or block it.

Airport blues

The Tuticorin airport is an example of the apathy of authorities towards people’s interests. People from Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari are travelling from Tuticorin airport.

First, the airport lacks proper infrastructure. It does not have adequate ATM facilities. There are no trolleys to take luggage inside. Further, the availability of cars and cabs is very feeble. The approach road to the airport has to be renovated urgently. I request the airport authorities concerned to take immediate steps to solve all these problems.
