Puducherry
PUDUCHERRY: The District Rural Development Agency on Monday organised a training programme for the presidents of Village Panchayat in Puducherry region to create awareness of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA). The training programme was part of DRDA’s preparations to implement the NREGA in the Union Territory from April 1 in all the 98 village panchayats that come under Puducherry and Karaikal regions. Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) M. Ramadass in his inaugural address stressed the need for complete transparency in implementing the scheme. Terming the scheme as “historic” in terms of alleviating the rural poverty, Mr. Ramadass said steps should be taken to see that the benefits of the scheme reach the targeted population. At the training programme the village panchayat presidents were informed about the provisions of the Act and the role they have to play in implementing the scheme. As per the guidelines of the NREGA programme, villagers would be offered works such as desilting canals, tank rehabilitation and water conservation. The village panchayat presidents were entrusted with the task of identifying beneficiaries for the programme and they would also issue job cards. The cards would have details of the family members and their economic status, officials in the DRDA said. Director of DRDA Mathew Samuel told The Hindu that the heads of the village panchayats have been asked to hold grama sabhas by the end of the January to identify the beneficiaries and the work to be taken in each village. A similar training programme for village panchayat presidents in Karaikal region would be held on February 11, according to Mr. Mathew Samuel.
