ERODE: The members of the Bhavani Drinking Water and Groundwater Environment Protection Movement and farmers conducted a two-wheeler rally at Sathyamangalam on Sunday in protest against discharge of effluents into the Bhavani River by industries. IndustriesThe agitators said that more than 20 industries were located on the banks of Bhavani river from Bhavanisagar Reservoir to Sathyamangalam. They stated that some of these industries were discharging untreated effluent into the river, which was causing various problems. DiseasesThe farmers in the area could not conduct agricultural operations due to the contaminated water and many were affected with diseases. The yield also had decreased. PanchayatsFurther, water was used for human consumption in Sathyamangalam, Gobichettipalayam and more than 18 panchayats.
