Record participation in millennium goal programme Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan felicitated BHOPAL: Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan said over the weekend that Madhya Pradesh has taken a big leap towards achieving the targets of the United Nations Millennium Campaign through people’s participation. The Chief Minister made this assertion at a special function held at the State Academy of Administration to felicitate him for record participation by the people of Madhya Pradesh to achieve the UN Millennium Development goals. He said the State Government, with people’s cooperation, had succeeded in spreading awareness about education, women’s empowerment, poverty eradication, children’s welfare, environment protection, prevention of diseases and health security of pregnant women. The Global Director of the UN Millennium Campaign, Salil Shetty, presented a certificate issued by the Guinness Book of World Records declaring Madhya Pradesh as the first State in the world to have maximum public participation in the social sector for the second consecutive year. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Chauhan said the UN had set a deadline of 15 years for achieving the targets of UN Millennium Campaign. The Madhya Pradesh Government swung into action and implemented many programmes for the welfare of children, women and the poor section of society. The programmes that have gone a long way towards ensuring the development of the poor children and women in the State include Jalabhishek Abhiyan, Ladli Laxmi Yojana, Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana, Gaon Ki Beti Yojana, Haryali Mahotsava, free supply of uniforms, text-books and bicycles to village girl students, he pointed out. Record participation in UN’s Stand Up and Speak Out programmes also shows people’s fervour and enthusiasm for the cause of progress and all-round development, the Chief Minister said, adding that through the Mukhyamantri Mazdoor Suraksha Yojana, the school going children of labourers had started getting scholarships, labourers had also been provided medical facilities and women labourers were being given paid maternity leave. “Source of inspiration”The UN Millennium Campaign director said that Mr. Chauhan was a source of inspiration for other States. He praised the Madhya Pradesh government’s efforts and hoped that the enthusiasm of the State Government and people of the State would continue in future also. He said that the UN Secretary-General had also praised the initiative taken by Mr. Chauhan and the cooperation extended by the people of Madhya Pradesh. The Speak Out campaign would be launched from October 15 to 17 this year throughout the State to create awareness about the UN Millennium Campaign.
