Plantain project

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: A project for producing the ‘kadali’ plantain required by the Guruvayur Devaswom was cleared by a meeting chaired by Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Retnakaran the other day.

Under it, this particular variety of plantain would be cultivated in the farm taken over by the Agriculture Department at Kannara, the other government farms in Thrissur district and the farms of the Kerala Agricultural University.

Societies of farmers would be set up to implement the project which would be a joint venture of the department, the VFPCK, the State Horticulture Mission and the Horticorp. The Guruvayur Devaswom requires around 10,000 ‘kadali’ plantains per day. The meeting which was attended by Agriculture Production Commissioner K. Jayakumar also resolved to open three special outlets for selling vegetables cultivated under organic farming.
