BIDAR: Officials of the Regional Transport Office (RTO), Bidar, have cautioned that checks for drunken driving will be conducted frequently in the city. The officials conducted a surprise check on Sunday night between 9.30 p.m. and 12 p.m. at Ambedkar Circle. RTO officer H.N. Ramesh said, “The impact of the checks was evident as many riders were caught unawares.” Alcohol metersMr. Ramesh said the office had been provided with two alcohol meters recently and that the time had come to make use of them. “Persons riding two-wheelers as well as drivers of four-wheelers, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation buses, trucks, autorickshaws were tested. In all around 60 drivers were tested but we did not come across anybody heavily drunk,” he said. Mr. Ramesh said that some of the drivers who were caught under the influence of alcohol were let off after being issued a warning. They were also asked to tell their friends not to drink and drive, he added. He said the matter will be discussed with Superintendent of Police A. Subramanyeswara Rao so that the Police Department could conduct checks jointly with the RTO and create awareness among the public on the consequences of drunken driving. Motorcycle inspectors Nagaraj and Kerur and others participated in the surprise checks.
