Jubilation: Family members of the employees Karnataka Cooperative Sugar Factory (KCSF) celebrating at Sangur in Haveri district on Monday. HAVERI: A day after the Governor decided to revive the Karnataka Cooperative Sugar Factory (KCSF) at Sangur in Haveri district, the sight at the factory workers’ colony wore a festive look here on Monday. On being informed that sugarcane would be crushed at the earliest, the workers and their families were seen celebrating by smearing “gulal” on each others faces, while many shouted slogans in favour of the Governor. Around 200 workers of the sugar factory had gone to Bangalore recently to highlight their problems after their protest at the Deputy Commissioner’s office premises in Haveri ended following their arrest on January 2. The workers are likely to return to Sangur on Tuesday as their demands have now been met. On Sunday, Governor Rameshwar Thakur held a high-level meeting on the issue and decided to have the factory handed over on lease to Gem Laboratories for a period of 30 years. The Government will receive Rs. 42 crore from the company towards lease payment. It had stipulated that crushing of sugarcane should begin within one month and workers be paid salaries due for the last six months. When contacted, Deputy Commissioner P.S. Vastrad told The Hindu that he was yet to receive an official communiqué on the issue. He said he was likely to receive it in a day or two and added that steps would be taken accordingly.
