BSNL launches mobile Internet

T. Ramavarman

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: BSNL, Kerala Circle, has launched the third generation Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA-3G) services through Evolution Data Only (EvDO) technology. This will help customers to access Internet services on their laptop or personal computer.

Kerala circle Chief General Manager K.S. Srinivasan told The Hindu here on Monday that very high Internet speed, up to two MBps, would be available through the EvDO technology.

“We have already given some CDMA-3G connections in the State. EvDO Base Transceiving Stations (BTS) have been commissioned in almost all district headquarters in the State. So the customers travelling from one end of the State to the other can access almost uninterrupted Internet services through the EvDO technology, barring in those areas which are far from the BTS,” Mr. Srinivasan said.

Deputy General Manager Sriramachandra Murty said subscribers could use these services by inserting the Network Interface Card (NIC) in their laptop or personal computer. “The BSNL is providing the NIC to customers both for an outright purchase rate and on instalment basis. Unlimited Internet usage is available to EvDO customers at fixed subscription rates. The bandwidth will be higher if the EvDO signal is stronger. Subscribers will, therefore, get better speed when they are stationary,” he said.

“If customers go out of the EvDO-BTS coverage area, they can still get Internet access through Packet Data Switching Network (PDSN) services though the speed will be lower around 100 KBps,” he said.

BSNL Deputy General Manager in charge of EvDO services in the State T. Srinivasan said 50 EvDO BTS had already been commissioned in various parts of the State. Through this network it would be possible to give about 5,000 EvDO connections.

“In reality, there is no ceiling on the number of connections possible, and what is significant is how many people log on to the services simultaneously, at a particular point of time. The speed will be less if more subscribers log in simultaneously. The number of BTS will have to be enhanced if more connections are to be provided,” he said.

Principal General Manager of BSNL, Thiruvananthapuram, George T. Mathew said EvDO BTS had been commissioned in the entire capital city. “We have already given some connections in the city on a trial basis and they have been found working very well.”

Mr. Mathew disclosed that 76 out of the 91 exchanges had already been covered under the broadband services.
