NEW DELHI: In a move that is bound to please a great many people hailing from Bihar, the Delhi Cabinet on Monday decided to establish a separate Maithili-Bhojpuri Academy here in the Capital under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister. Following the meeting, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the new Academy was being established since Delhi has a sizeable number of Maithili and Bhojpuri-speaking people with a defined cultural identity. Maithili had also been included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, she added. The language has rich literary traditions and has given poets like Vidyapati to Indian literary panorama. As for Bhojpuri, she said a large number of people who speak the language live in Delhi and therefore it deserves proper support and patronage from the State. The cultural dimension of these two languages has already enriched Delhi for quite some time and Chhath Pooja celebration has become an integral part of Delhi’s cultural calendar, she noted. The proposed Academy will organise programmes, seminars, exhibitions and make arrangements for the translation of work of other languages. It will also help in publication of books, and support, recognise and aid deserving institutions connected with these languages.
