NAGAPATTINAM: A task force constituted for preparing a scheme for modernisation of the irrigation system in the Cauvery delta will submit a draft plan to the State Government by this month-end, C.K. Nagarajan, Chief Engineer, Public Works Department, said on Monday. Speaking at the National Farmers’ Day seminar organised by the Cauvery Farmers Protection Association and the Cauvery Human Resources Development Centre at Thevur, he said the scheme, which would be implemented with assistance from the World Bank, would improve the irrigation potential.
S. Suriyanarayanan, Administrative Officer, Agriculture Insurance Company Ltd, said premium collection under crop insurance in Tamil Nadu was Rs. 33 crore from 2000 to 2006. Claims for Rs. 175 crore were settled. In Thanjavur district, the claim settlement stood at Rs. six crore, and in Tiruvarur, it was Rs. 60 crore. In Nagapattinam, the amount settled was Rs. 75 crore. The Government was giving 50 per cent subsidy in the premium. S. Jagarajan of the Madras Institute of Development Studies warned farmers about global warming and urged them to change the pattern of cultivation.

Durairaj, president of the association, attended the meeting.
