Assistive devices prove popular

TIRUCHI: In all, 4,500 people have benefited and 6,000 others registered for assistive devices at the ‘Samarthya 2008,’ a national exhibition on assistive devices, teaching kits, learning materials and barrier-free features for the physically challenged individual.

Announcing this at the valediction function, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan said the assistive devices would be supplied to registered persons through the district administration in a month. The exhibition housed 120 stalls from 15 States, displaying aids and appliances made with the latest technology to make it more user-friendly.

The Minister urged the non-governmental organisations, working for children with multiple disabilities, to make use of the innovative physiotherapy equipment displayed at the exhibition. A few stalls highlighted the need for vocational training and brought in a whole host of opportunities available for physically challenged individuals.

The expo brought out the need to identify their hidden talent, she said.

In his special address, State Minister for Forests N. Selvaraj said the State government stressed on early intervention programme to prevent high-level of complexities among children. The polio drive in the State was extensive, covering 70 lakh children through 5,000 camps this year.

Collector Ashish Vachhani presided over the function. Mayor Sarubala R. Tondaiman, Chairperson of the State Social Welfare Board A. Rokkaya Mallik and the Chairperson of the District Panchayat V. Sangeetha offered felicitations.
