Corrections and clarifications
In a report “Banks jostle for a bigger market share” (“Business Review” page, January 7, 2008), a sentence in the sixth paragraph was “(The RBI defines banking business as deposits minus advances minus inter-bank liabilities).” It was an error and should have been “deposits plus advances minus inter-bank liabilities”.
In a report “Grievances of physically challenged redressed” (Tamil Nadu, January 7, 2008, page 7), there was an incorrect reference made to the “Chief Commissioner of Disabilities of the Union Government Manoj Kumar”. It should have been “Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities [Dr.] Manoj Kumar.” (The office of the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities was established to implement the Persons with Disabilities Act 1995. It has been provided in the Act that there shall be a Chief Commissioner at the Central level and a Commissioner in each State/Union Territory. The Chief Commissioner is vested with the power of a civil court under the Code of Civil Procedure.)
The first paragraph in a report “India, U.S. to discuss areas of collaboration in healthcare” (January 6, 2008) was: “Just ahead of United States Secretary of State Michael Leavitt’s visit to India, key players in the health care industry are hoping to discuss areas of collaboration between the two nations to benefit the global health services sector.” It was an error. Michael (Mike) Okerlund Leavitt is Secretary of Health & Human Services, U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
The promo “Team to visit Delta districts – page 8” (Tamil Nadu editions, January 5, 2008, page 1) had the incorrect photograph — of former Tamil Nadu Finance Minister C. Ponnaiyan. The correct photograph should have been that of Union Minister of State for Finance S.S. Palanimanickam, as the report, “Central team to assess flood damage in delta”, said.
In a report “[Indian Science Congress] ISC: change in venue causes problem” (City edition – Visakhapatnam, January 5, 2008, page 3), Nobel laureate was misspelt as Noble laureate in five instances (text and caption). (Nobel laureate Dr. Robert Curl Jr. delivered the keynote address — on nanotechnology.)
In a report “Tiruchi to get three bridges” (City edition – Tiruchirapalli, January 6, 2008, page 1), the second paragraph was: “The three bridges will come up across railway level crossings between Srirangam and Fort stations; between Manapparai and Samudram; and between Lalgudi and Sirudhaiyur ….” It was an error. One of the bridges is coming up between “Srirangam and Trichy Town station (on the Chennai line)”. There is no rail link between Srirangam and Fort station (on the Karur line).
The second paragraph in a report “All rural households to get electricity by 2012” (January 4, 2008) was: “As per the proposal cleared by the Cabinet, 1.15 lakh villages will be electrified and 2.34 households provided connections by 2009. The rest of the un-electrified villages will be electrified and all rural households provided access to electricity by 2012.” The figure “2.34 households” should have been “2.34 crore households.”
The heading of a Bhopal report (Some early editions, January 4, 2008, page 1) was: “Student shot dead by
junior in Satna”, while the text correctly said that after an argument between the Class VIII student and a Class X student, the elder one allegedly fired at the junior. Later editions had the correct heading — “School boy shot dead by senior in Satna”.
A sentence in “Jammu and Kashmir Ministry expanded” (Delhi edition, January 2, 2008) was: “Mr. Mula Ram [Cabinet Minister] and Mr. Garu Ram [Minister of State] belong to the Dalit community.” The Jammu Correspondent clarifies that Mr. Gharu Ram (and not Garu Ram, as was published) is a Jat leader.
