Paris: On the eve of a major press conference during which he is expected to field questions about the success of his economic policies, a possible Cabinet reshuffle and his alleged plans to remarry, French President Nicolas Sarkozy finds his approval ratings have slipped by as much as seven per cent.
A CSA poll published in Sunday’s Le Parisien newspaper showed just 48 per cent of French voters trusted Mr Sarkozy to run their country, seven points down on the previous month’s tally. Forty-eight per cent of voters say they trust the President to tackle France’s problems, compared to 55 per cent last month. Forty-five per cent said they did not trust him, compared to 38 a month before
In the Liberation poll, just 34 per cent of those questioned believed Mr. Sarkozy “had instigated measures likely to improve spending power” among the ordinary French people. The same poll found that 63 per cent thought Mr Sarkozy was “too ready to put his private life on public display”.
The opposition, meanwhile, accused Mr Sarkozy of putting his love life on display to deflect attention from France’s economic troubles.
