BANGALORE: A sense of satisfaction was palpable on the faces of these National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets who arrived here on Monday after completing a 16-day tedious journey on their bicycles.

The scorching sun did not hinder their joy of accomplishment as this group of cadets from National College in Jayanagar reached the Mahatma Gandhi statue.

The cycle expedition to Karwar, which was flagged off on December 24 here, covered nearly 1,400 km and passed through Tumkur, Bhadravati, Sagar and Honnavar.

The team returned here via Udupi, Mangalore, Sakleshpur and Hassan.

Led by Company Senior Under Officer S.D. Anand Kumar, the cadets, all in the age group of 18 to 20, were on a mission to create awareness among the people against child abuse, environment, and also inspire the youth to join the Army.

Anand Kumar, a final year BA student of the college, said: “We were well received by the public. Eight of us staged a 30-minute play at Karwar and Honnavar on child abuse. A 20-minute play conveying the message to join the Army was staged at Karwar, Honnavar and Udupi. We visited many schools and colleges and motivated the youth to join the Army.

We have distributed pamphlets among students and guided them on the process to be followed to join the Army.”

Anand Kumar has led two cycle expeditions to Madikeri and Bandipur.

According to Ramakrishna M., “It was an excellent experience. Passing through the Western Ghats was thrilling and memorable.

“We were overwhelmed while cycling through the green covered hills,” he said.

The other members of the team are Tharunraj N., Sagar M., Manjunath D., Gundappa T., Prabhuswamy S., Harish Kumar M., Suresh K., Lokesh Prabhu S., Girish H.N., Vishwanath C., Sandeep S. and Sunil Kumar S.
