90 police personnel have already been given basic training Forty more checkpoints planned CHENNAI: Coastal security provided by the State police is likely to get a boost with the completion of two marine police stations. The construction of 10 more stations is in full swing. The stations, each costing Rs.24 lakh, are part of the Centre’s scheme for States to enhance coastal security. The stations have been planned at Vedaranyam, Keezhaiyur and Nagapattinam in Nagapattinam district, Sethubhavachatram and Adirampattinam in Thanjavur district, Manamelkudi and Thirupunnavasal in Pudukottai district, Mandapam and Devipattinam in Ramanathapuram district, Tharuvaikulam in Tuticorin district, Koodangulam in Tirunelveli district and Colachel in Kanyakumari district. The construction of the stations at Tharuvaikulam and Colachel has been completed. The other stations are expected to be ready in a month, Jagan M. Seshadri, Additional Director-General of Police, Coastal Security Group, told The Hindu. The personnel for the stations were being posted. Ninety personnel of the Tamil Nadu Special Police had already been given basic training, including four days of sailing experience, by the Coast Guard. The State Government made a special sanction of Rs.2 lakh for the purpose. The Tamil Nadu police had the unique distinction of being the first to be trained by the Coast Guard in seafaring. The Centre had announced that two boats would be given to each of the stations for patrolling. Till the Government made available the boats, the police could hire them. The State had submitted to the Union Home Ministry the modalities and financial implications of hiring boats.
Besides the 60 checkpoints, 40 more had been planned. Land had been handed over to the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation for constructing 27 checkpoints. Identification of suitable land for the remaining checkpoints was on, Mr. Seshadri said.
