Uttar Pradesh enters final

Special Correspondent

Baroda: Fast bowler Sudeep Tyagi brought a halt to Saurashtra’s resistance with an emphatic dismissal of Sitanshu Kotak as Uttar Pradesh entered the Ranji Trophy cricket final to be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai from January 16.

Disappointed to see Ravikant Shukla miss a sitter at third slip in his second over, Tyagi sent down a yorker-length ball around the wicket and castled Kotak at the stroke of the first hour here on Monday morning.

Earlier Pravin Kumar ejected Kamlesh Makwana and Sandeep Jobanputra from the middle and Uttar Pradesh romped home by 48 runs, the match ending in six sessions and one hour.

Remarkable session

It was a remarkable first season for Tyagi, who is bound to cross Vinay Kumar’s tally of 40 wickets in the National championship.

Touching a speed of around 140kmph, Tyagi is another new ball bowler who has emerged from Uttar Pradesh.

Tyagi has been chiefly instrumental in taking Uttar Pradesh to the final — it will be his first — with 39 wickets in seven matches.

The Wankhede Stadium pitch will assist him in bounce, but then it must be said he has performed on flat wickets and ones like the one here at the Motibagh Palace where the Saurashtra batsmen were all at sea.

Like Rajasthan’s Pankaj Singh, Pravin Kumar is another cricketer with all-round potential and his contribution with the ball has not been any less.

The semifinal here proved again that in ideal conditions, Indian seamers with genuine skills will thrive.

Of the 40 wickets that fell, 36 were either bowled, leg before or caught by the wicketkeeper and in the slip cordon.

The scores:

Uttar Pradesh — 1st innings: 188.
