India Greens shocks Uzbekistan

HYDERABAD: The lowest-ranked India Greens sprung a surprise in the women’s section, scoring a 2-1 win over better-rated Uzbekistan, in the Vizag Steel Asian team chess championship at Swarna Bharati Indoor Stadium here on Monday.

In the men’s section, GM Krishnan Sasikiran did not really enjoy his birthday as he had to settle for a draw against Timur Gareev of Uzbekistan in Queen’s Indian Defence.

However, GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly was ruthless in seizing the opportunity to score an impressive win over Anton Filippov in Ruy Lopez variation. On the other boards, Saidali Iuldachev-Abhijit Kunte and G.N. Gopal-Mafat Dzhumaev games ended in draws to leave India a 2.5-1.5 winner.

The results: Men: Vietnam bt India Blues 2.5-1.5 (Truong Son Nguyen Ngoc drew with Neelotpal Das; Liem Le Quang bt Deepan Chakravarthy; Dung Nguyen Anh drew with Gogineni Rohit; Hai Dao Thien drew with S.Arun Prasad).

Uzbekistan lost to India Reds 1.5-2.5 (Timur Gareev drew with Krishnan Sasikiran; Anton Fillipinov lost to Surya Sekhar Ganguly; Saidali Iuldachev drew with Abhijit Kunte; Marat Dzhumaev drew with G.N.Gopal).

China bt Iran 3-1; Sri Lanka lost to Afghanistan 1-3.

Women: Iran lost to India Reds 1-2 (Atousa Pourkashiyan drew with Dronavalli Harika; Shayesteh Ghader Pour lost to Tania Sachdev; Shadi Paridar drew with Nisha Mohota).

Vietnam drew with India Blues 1.5-1.5 (Tu Le Thanh lost to Swathi Ghate; An Thanh Nguyen Thi drew with Sowmya Swaminathan; Kim Le Kieu Thien bt Baisakhi Das).

Uzbekistan lost to India Greens 1-2 (Yulduz Hamrakulova bt Ch.Sahajasri; O.Sabirova lost to N.L.V.Anusha; Nafisa Muminova lost to Kanuri Tejaswi).

Sri Lanka lost to China 0-3.
