PUDUCHERRY: The government has decided to entrust the job of providing IAS coaching to graduates belonging to the Scheduled Castes to a private centre in Puducherry. A total of 20 candidates sponsored by the Adidravidar Development Corporation, a government undertaking, would be provided coaching in the general studies and optional subject papers for a period of five months from January-end to May. The institute, located in Kosapalayam, would be providing training in the general studies paper and also the optional subject. It would be charging Rs. 15,000 a student a month. Managing Director of the corporation S. Kuppusamy told The Hindu on Tuesday that persons in the age group of 21-35 would be chosen for sponsorship after a preliminary test. This was the only coaching centre that had come forward to conduct the training, he added. Till date, the Corporation has issued 120 applications to Scheduled Caste graduates who are interested in joining free coaching classes for IAS examinations. Only persons who have been residents of the Union Territory for a minimum of five years can apply for this coaching. The last date for submission of filled in application forms is January 14. According to official sources, the government had conducted similar coaching classes for IAS examination for SC graduates, but they failed to produce the expected results due to various reasons including lack of facilities for specialised faculty. As early as 1999 the government had inaugurated coaching classes at the Government ITI for Women at Vambakeerapalayam by IAS officers and Pondicherry Civil Services officers. Later, the Puducherry Industrial Promotion Development and Investment Corporation (PIPDIC) and the Pondicherry University’s Community College had conducted the courses, sources recalled.
