Black money seized in Tirur

Staff Reporter

Police say combing operations helped

Tight security was there in the town for festival

A few people were taken into preventive custody

MALAPPURAM: Black money of nearly Rs. 2 lakh was seized from two carriers in Tirur on Tuesday, the police said.

Jamshir from Pookkottumpadam was held with Rs. 1.09 lakh at Alathiyoor and Sharafuddeen from Wayanad was held with Rs. 75,000 at Tanur, the police said.

The police said they were carriers of hawala money. They were caught during combing operations as part of enhanced security in and around Tirur in view of the BP Angadi festival, which ended on Tuesday.

A few workers of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the National Development Front were taken into preventive custody in and around Tirur to forestall any possible threat to the religious festival.

Incident-free fete

An RSS man was killed during the last year’s festival, triggering a series of attacks on members of two communities. Four people were killed and about a dozen injured in the attacks. The festival this time was incident-free.

The police had deployed more than 1,200 personnel in various forms. Apart from special striking forces and intelligence wings in plainclothes, dozens of pickets were set up in and around Tirur. There were 30 mobile police units exclusively for the festival.

Four executive magistrates were posted to the site. The District Collector had banned pillion riding on motorbikes in Tirur, Tanur, Kalpakancheri, Parappanangadi and Kottakkal areas.

Ban till today

The ban will continue till Wednesday morning. Women and children below 12 years of age have been exempted from the pillion ride ban.

Although the festival ended on Tuesday, a strong police force will continue in the area considering the first anniversary of the RSS activist’s killing on January 20.
