Sunil Jairaj was among a 20-member team selected for the event
Sunil Jairaj KOLAR: A rousing reception was accorded here on Tuesday to Sunil Jairaj from Kolar who successfully participated in the 24,000-km run across the globe in 95 days last year. The run was organised by Blue Planet Foundation of the U.S. with support from the United Nations Organisation to create awareness on the importance of water. Sunil Jairaj, who is living in the U.S. to pursue his higher studies, was the only person to represent India in the run. He was among a 20-member team of athletes selected from different countries for the run. When Sunil Jairaj, who was brought in a procession, entered Chennaiah Rangamandira, the packed hall gave him a standing ovation. School and college students gathered around Sunil Jairaj to get his autograph. Overwhelmed by the hearty welcome offered by the people of his native place, Sunil Jairaj called upon youngsters to join hands in solving the acute water shortage problem in the district. He appealed to teachers to highlight the importance of pure water in class. Felicitating the achiever, K.H. Muniyappa, Union Minister of State for Highways and Surface Transport, announced government support to Sunil Jairaj in realising his dream of establishing a water resource research and management centre near Kolar to address the drinking water problems of the region. The Minister exhorted the youth to set a goal in life and work hard to achieve it. Deputy Commissioner G. Ramachandra presided over the function organised by the district administration, the zilla panchayat, the Department of Youth Services and Sports and the Nehru Yuva Kendra. Kolar Zilla Panchayat president A.C. Nagarathna, MLC V.R. Sudarshan and M. Nagaraj, Sunil Jairaj’s mentor, participated.
