For them, age is not a barrier

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Have you had an overdose of the much hyped international cricketers, their controversies and the politics surrounding the game? Here’s a whiff of fresh air: Bangalore will witness a cricket match — played with the much lighter tennis ball — for older women who will don their cricket uniforms to prove that age is no barrier to doing anything meaningful.

The T.D. Naganna Grounds near Ramakrishna Ashram in Basavangudi will play host to a set of games between grandmothers and mothers vying for honours on Saturday. “This is first of its kind for mothers and grandmothers. We want to create a record,” said Chudamani, president of Spurthi Mahila Samaj and the architect of the event.

The matches will be played between Spurthi Mahila Samaja, Hanumanthnagar, and Keerthi Mahila Samaj, Uttarahalli. While the mothers’ cricket team will play a 16-over match, the grandmothers have been given a four over reduction and will play a 12-over match. The winners will be awarded with “Spurthi Cup.”

The grandmothers’ team will be led by Bhagyalakshmi Narayanamurthy and Rohini Gopal, while the mothers’ team is led by Bharathi Krishnappa and Geetha Ashok. “These housewives and grandmothers have practised with enthusiasm and are eager to play the game,” Ms. Chudamani said.
