Women’s quota Bill: BJP plans stir in Delhi

BANGALORE: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mahila Morcha will embark upon a Delhi chalo protest and lay siege to Parliament House on February 21 to protest against the delay in tabling of the Women’s Reservation Bill by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government.

Karnataka Mahila Morcha president Bharathi Shetty told The Hindu after a meeting of the State morcha in Bangalore on Tuesday that about one lakh women from various States would participate in the proposed agtiation. The Karnataka unit of the Morcha was planning to send about 5,000 women members from the State to Delhi to take part in that protest, she said.

‘Matter of concern’

She said it was a matter of concern that the UPA Government was delaying the tabling of the Women’s Quota Bill despite a woman being the chairperson of the UPA. Ms. Shetty said the Mahila Morcha members had been told to galvanise the organisation ahead of the ensuing election to the State Assembly. She said the morcha had decided to play a pro-active role by taking up various issues concerning people.

She said the BJP had decided to provide 33 per cent reservation to women at various levels in the organisation.

BJP National Executive Committee member Mridula Sinha attended the meeting on Tuesday.
