KOCHI: The Kerala Quarry Association has called off the State-wide indefinite strike, which was in force since January 7. The decision follows discussions held by Industries Minister Elamaram Karim with the Association members through District Collector AP.M. Mohammed Hanish. A meeting will be held in Thiruvananthapuram on January 15 to discuss the demands raised by the Association. Construction sector hitThe Minister took the initiative for the talks foreseeing a crisis in the construction sector owing to the closure of stone quarries. The Collector passed on the information to the Association at a conference held at the Collectorate. The Association had resorted to strike raising demands like discontinuance of reassessment and imposition of fine over the stone quarries, withdrawal of the cases registered against the quarries under the Explosives Act, amendment to the Explosives Act, creation of a law for the protection of quarries, ensuring the Association’s presence in quarry protection samithis, formation of site insurance scheme and commission for protection of quarry industries. State representatives of the Association P. Murukankutty, Prasad Vellylazhikam, E.C. Balan, K.C. George, K.G. Johnson, Varghese Babu, K. K. Ravi, and Mathur Suresh and district leaders Varkey Kallokkaran and Sukumaran attended the meeting.
