Karuppiah claims mini marathon race gold

Madurai: Karuppiah of Armed Reserve Police, Madurai won the gold in men’s category in the district-level mini marathon race organised by Madurai unit of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu at Madurai on Tuesday.

The results (all winners):

Men (15km): Karuppiah (AR Police, Madurai); Women (15km): Rohini (Yadava College); Boys (10km): Ramesh (Govt. Boys HSS, Alanganallur); Girls (10km): Fatima (Nirmala School); Veterans (5km): Karuppiah (Jogging Club).

Easy for Srivilliputtur

At Srivilliputtur, Jeevakumar’s 57 helped CMS HSS, Srivilliputtur defeat Vinayaka MHSS, Sivakasi by 61 runs in the eight-team group ‘B’ league in the all-India inter-school Twenty20 cricket tournament for Anandam Ammal Trophy at Krishnan Koil on Tuesday.

The scores (Group ‘B’):

CMS HSS, Srivilliputtur 145 for four in 20 overs (Jeevakumar 57, Kannan 35) bt Vinayaka MHSS, Sivakasi 84 in 18.5 overs (Kumar three for 22).

SDH Jain Vidyalaya, Madurai 116 in 19.5 overs bt GS Hindu HSS, Srivilliputtur 101 in 13.5 overs (Karthikeyan four for seven, Monis three for eight).

Group ‘C’: Raja HSS, Sivagangai 161 for six in 20 overs (Mummurthy 47, Ilayaraja 30, R. Siva three for 24) bt AVRM MHSS, Ambasamudram 87 in 18.5 overs (Thangavel four for seven, Gopi three for 15).

Coimbatore in final

Host Coimbatore scored an outright win over Kanyakumari to enter the final of the TNCA under-19 inter-district cricket tournament at the SNR Sons grounds here on Tuesday.

Overnight 214 for four, Coimbatore, thanks to brilliant knocks from Sethumadhavan (104) and Siddarth (121), compiled 369 in 82 overs.

The host then struck through off-spinneer Harish (six for 56) to bundle out the visitor for 202 in its second essay for an innings and eight-run win.

The scores: Semifinals: Coimbatore 369 in 82 overs (K.R. Sethumadhavan 104, Siddarth 121, Antony Dass five for 100) bt Kanyakumari 159 & 202 in 41 overs (Prabhu Singh 47, Harish six for 56, K.R. Sethumadhavan three for 36). Coimbatore won by an innings and eight runs.

Big win for Majestic CC

Saravana Sundareswaran’s 67 helped Majestic Cricket Club chalk out a 148-run victory over Victory Cricket Club in the Canara Bank-MDCA first division ‘A’ zone league at Madurai on Sunday.

The scores:

First division ‘A’ zone: Majestic CC 307 for nine in 50 overs (Saravana Sundareswaran 67, Chandrasekar 44) bt Victory CC 159 in 40.5 overs (Rajesh four for 23, Marutha Pandy 47). ‘B’ zone: Pykara Star CC 171 in 43.2 overs (Vinoth 42, Soundara Pandy four for 18) bt Majestic Cubs CC 141 in 37.4 overs.

Second division: Fanatic CC 102 in 27.2 overs (Krishnan 40) lost to Thirunagar Rainbow CC 106 for seven in 20 overs (Krishnan four for 30); Supersonic Concord CC 186 for nine in 30 overs (Senthil 72, Dhaheer 40) bt Superkast CC 104 in 23.3 overs; Canara Bank CC 126 in 28 overs (Sakthivel 42, Rajesh four for 27) lost to PS Oliva CC 128 for seven in 23.1 overs.

Valluvar Gurukulam posts win

Valluvar Gurukulam, Chennai beat PSC English School, Virudhunagar 25-12, 25-20 in the five-team group ‘A’ league in the all India inter-school boys volleyball tournament.

Group ‘A’: Valluvar Gurukulam, Chennai bt PSC English School, Virudhunagar 25-12, 25-20; St. Francis Xavier HSS, Dindigul bt Thiagaraja HSS, Srivilliputtur 25-12, 25-5.

Sathyabama defeated MGK Vidyapith 75-44 in a league counter of the all-India inter-zone inter-University basketball tournament in Pudukkotai on Tuesday.

Kanchana Memorial wins

Kanchana Memorial Cricket Club (Pallipalayam) posted a seven-wicket win over PRP Kapil Cricket Club (Namakkal) in the Canara Bank-DCAN ‘A’ division league at the SPB Colony grounds here recently.

The scores: Rajaganapathy CC (Namakkal) 140 in 33.3 overs bt ICRC (Sankari West) 115 in 37.5 overs (Arul Selvan five for 13); PRP Kapil CC (Namakkal) 110 in 28.2 overs lost to Kanchana Memorial CC 114 for three in 17.3 overs (Arun Kumar 58 not out).

Basketball tournament

At Coimbatore, PSG College of Arts and Science will conduct the 35th State-level inter-collegiate floodlit basketball tournament for the PSG Trophy at its courts from January 21 to 23.
