Staff Reporter

Top officials assure them of full protection in their villages

They were taking shelter in relief camps from December 28

Officials explain security arrangements to them

BERHAMPUR: Some 580 persons of Kandhamal district, who had taken shelter in a relief camp at Karadabadi in Ganjam district after the communal violence, returned back to their own district on Tuesday.

They decided to return only after promises of protection and relief from Kandhamal district Collector Manish Verma and Kandhmal Superintendent of Police Nikhil Kumar Kanodia in the presence of Ganjam district Collector V.K. Pandian. These three top officials had reached the relief camp at Karadabadi in Sorada block to persuade the panicked families for their return.

One-hundred and twenty families from Brahmanigaon, Gadapur and Katingia areas of Kandhamnal district were taking shelter at the relief camp since December 28.

These families had crossed the Kandhamal district border to reach Merikote village in Sorada block of Ganjam district.

Initially they were provided shelter at the Merikote School.

Later they were shifted to a bigger school at Karadabadi for better accommodation. The Ganjam district administration had arranged food relief measures for these panicked families from adjoining Kandhamal district.

Journey begins

Initially, the families living at the relief camp were not ready to return back as they feared further attacks by the persons who had made them homeless.

The senior officials of police and administration explained them the details of security arrangements at their villages.

Mr. Verma promised that these families would be provided all relief measures at their home villages, like what they were getting in the relief camp at Karadabadi.

At last the families, decided to return Kandhamal district and boarded the mini buses hired up by the administration for their return journey.

On Tuesday these panicked families were taken to relief camps at Daringbadi.

They would be sent back to their own villages from Daringbadi during next few days, according to information.
