Women organisations seek deployment of police in interior villages to make people feel safe BHUBANESWAR: Several prominent women’s organisations on Tuesday criticised the State government for its ‘poor relief measures’ for the victims of the communal violence in Kandhamal. Addressing a press conference after a visit to several affected villages, the representatives of All-India Democratic Women’s Association, National Alliance of Women, Nari Suraksha Samiti and others alleged that the administration had completely failed in dealing with the situation. Poor qualityWhile the women had been given a saree each, the girls, who were living in the relief camps, had been managing with the same dress for over 12 days with the authorities providing them anything to wear, they said. The blankets provided to the affected people were of poor quality. Temporary homesThose whose houses had been burnt should be provided with plastic sheets to set up temporary homes till they were Indira Awas houses, they said. They also said that the administration had failed to instil confidence in the minds of the locals in the affected areas till date. They demanded police should be deployed in interior villages to make the affected people feel safe. “The police were just camping at the school buildings in the area,” said Tapasi Praharaj of AIDWA. The other demandThe women leaders further demanded that voluntary organisations should also be allowed to distribute relief among the affected people.
