Property tax assessment irregularities to be set right

Coimbatore: Director of Town Panchayats K. Gopal on Friday after a review of the Anna Renaissance Scheme in the town panchayats in Coimbatore District said irregularities in property tax assessment should be set right before March 31. He said it could be done by availing services of women self-help groups. He also called for speedy steps to realise tax arrears.

To tide over the drinking water constraints in the 23 panchayats adjoining the Coimbatore Corporation areas, the implementation of the second phase of Pilloor drinking water supply scheme would be completed soon.

He also exhorted the town panchayat officials to identify places for dumping waste especially in the wake of the Government’s decision to implement the solid waste management scheme in all town panchayats.

In addition, the town panchayat officials should impart adequate training on segregation of the bio-degradable and non-degradable waste at the source besides adequate exposure to manure generation from waste.

He also advised the elected representatives and the executive officers to approach leading industries and corporate houses for creation of basic essential infrastructure such as drinking water facility, public convenience, marriage hall and other facilities like the electric crematorium contributed by Pricol.

The officials were also exhorted to carry out emergency repair works, renovation works and cleaning up of the town panchayats to give them a facelift for the ensuing Pongal. In Coimbatore under the Anna Renaissance Scheme for town panchayats works were being speeded up in 13 town panchayats at Rs 50 lakh each. During the year 2007, 561 town panchayats across the State had witnessed rapid progress and efforts would be made during the current year for improving the conditions of other town panchayats.
