N. Gopalaswami to review poll preparedness

J. Venkatesan

New Delhi: Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami and two Commissioners Navin Chawla and S.Y. Quraishi left for Bangalore on Tuesday to oversee the preparation of electoral rolls and to review the arrangements for the Karnataka Assembly polls due in a couple of months.

During their visit, the commission will hold meetings with the poll officials and review the progress of the preparation of draft voters’ list before its publication.

Sources told The Hindu that the Commission was upset with the tardy progress of the preparation of voters’ list. A report submitted by the observers sent to the State last week for inspection.

In a few districts, the number of voters was over 90 per cent of the population in that State as against the national average of around 60 to 65 per cent. Sources said the commission would undertake a door-to-door verification of the voters’ list.
